Alyssa’s Bow Tie Warriors

Epilepsy has changed my life for the better and worse. I was diagnosed at 4 years old. There have been many obstacles that I have had to overcome but I know that I am stronger because of it. Having my family by my side rooting me on, I have been able to push through the hardest times. Sadly there are MANY misconceptions about Epilepsy and I am hoping by raising awareness that those will change. I am used to hearing them all the time by now. No, I will not have a seizure just by looking at a flashing light. However, a seizure can come out of nowhere. I have had a seizure while driving on the highway. Unfortunately, that resulted in a trip to the hospital and my parents getting a heart-dropping phone call from a State Trooper. My Epilepsy has affected my entire family. I have watched my family constantly worry if I will have another seizure or hurt myself again from one. Now, I am a teacher and recently married woman who owns her own home. At one time in my life I was living at my parents, not allowed to work or drive, relied on everyone for things, having to be watched constantly, wondering each day if I was going to have another seizure. I would have never thought I would have gotten to this point in my life. My seizures are under control right now and I do my best every day to take care of my health. I still deal with several side effects from medications and there are still many obstacles I need to overcome because of Epilepsy but I have a strong support system with me at all times. Not only am I a warrior, but my family is as well. Researchers have come a long way in the information that they have learned about Epilepsy but there is still a lot to learn. There is still no cure but hopefully one day there will be. It is very important to raise awareness for Epilepsy and inform people on seizure safety. I will be walking to raise awareness and funds so that one day someone can say “I am cured!”
