HOBSCOTCH (HOme Based Self-management and COgnitive Training CHanges lives) is a behavioral program designed to address memory and attention problems. It uses problem solving therapy to improve memory function in people with epilepsy.  The program is designed to help adults with seizures find ways to manage and cope with memory problems in order to lead a happier, more productive life.

The program consists of 8 sessions delivered by a certified HOBSCOTCH Memory Coach.  The sessions occur weekly and last 45-60 minutes.  The first session is conducted either in-person, in a private office setting, or virtually while the participant is at home using a computer or tablet and a webcam.

The 8 sessions cover three domains of memory problems related to epilepsy:

  • Organizational Skills
  • Seizure Management
  • Social Skills

Must be 18 years of age.
Have regular access to a phone.
Be able to read and write in English.

The HOBSCOTCH program was first evaluated as part of a study conducted at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Epilepsy Center in New Hampshire.  This study suggested that a self-management intervention can be effectively delivered over the telephone and evaluation demonstrated improved quality of life  among participants.

Funding for this program is provided through the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
